A note from Soo, the creator behind Backchat:<\/p>
I have Multiple Sclerosis and in 2016 my MS became progressive which resulted in me losing a lot of the sensation & most of the mobility in my legs thus, needing a wheelchair to get around. When I first became a full-time wheelchair user one of the main differences that I noticed between being a wheelie as opposed to a walker is just how many people STARE. At first it was, to say the least, somewhat unnerving! - a more sensitive soul could have been forgiven for becoming paranoid: having pink hair, I was already kind of used to getting the odd double-take or two but this was on another level! I mean, I\u2019m not suggesting the stares were all hostile or negative or anything like that, they were just full-on stare-into-your-soul kind of looks, it often felt as if they were trying to read my mind, eek<\/em>!<\/p> As time moved on I became accustomed to the attention and realised that actually, a lot of the time it is just pure curiosity: when \u2018able\u2019 folk are faced with disability (in particular with wheels) they are subsequently faced with internal questions- \u201cwhat\u2019s wrong with her? why\u2019s she in a wheelchair, can she walk\/speak\/understand\/etc etc etc..\u201c<\/p> So I decided to add stickers initially ( and then *back covers) to my chair to give them something to actually look at! -I still<\/em> do this, I\u2019m always customising my chair to suit my mood or the occasion \ud83d\ude07.
